Week tip: Wes Anderson gala

30 Apr 2018

No idea what to do during the upcoming week? Our week tippers know what to do! This week, Lee Collings tips a full Wes Anderson night.

Since the beginning of a career spanning just over two decades; Houston born director, producer and screenwriter Wes Anderson has become a one of the pioneers of modern-day cinema. The American’s aesthetic screenplay, alternative humour and animation has seen him achieve major success in the industry leading to several Oscar-nominations for films such as The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) and star-studded comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014). As a director, Anderson achieved critical acclaim for his animation of the Roald Dahl classic Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) which showcases his quirky, comical style; with the reception of the film building anticipation for his long-awaited return to animation this summer.

Anderson’s incoming animated thriller Isle of Dogs shows a futuristic Japanese archipelago in which dogs have been banished to a segregated island due to the outbreak of an illness that they are blamed for. The storyline covers a boy’s quest to be reunited with his dog, featuring an array of voice-overs from stars such as Bryan Cranston, Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson; setting the film up to be another animated classic from Anderson.

So calling all Wes Anderson fans, film addicts and students of media alike! Next Wednesday (19:30-22:30) LUX Cinema welcomes Deniz Ezgi Kurt and Maarten Van Gageldonk for an expert guest lecture on the innovative director’s visual style and cinema followed by an exclusive first screening of the long-anticipated Isle of Dogs alongside thematic cocktails; surely not one to miss!
