Week tip: Surprise movie

07 Nov 2017

No idea what to do during the upcoming week? Our week tippers know what to do! This week, Antonia Leise recommends leaning back and let the cinema surprise you.

In times of streaming-suppliers like Netflix or Amazon Prime that deliver your current TV-show-obsession, there is a special appeal to sometimes leave your sofa or bed and watch a movie on the big screen. Cinemas have a certain kind of magic. Be it the mere presence of nachos, the big red chairs or the rustling sound of popcorn. It is charming and always worth a visit, especially in times of exam- and due-date-anxiety. And taking the trip to the local cinema is even better when the movie is a surprise. The last point might provoke a inner Wait, what?-reaction in some readers — but hear me out!

Everybody knows that Nijmegen loves its Lux, with the artsy movies and the cozy atmosphere. But especially on Sunday, a visit to the other cinema, Vue, can definitely pay off. Then, Nijmegen’s more commercial cinema hosts a sneak preview and I guarantee, it is everything anyone ever needed on an late autumn evening in November.

During the sneak preview, movie-goers are surprised with a movie, that is not yet out in Dutch cinemas. Movies that I personally watched during the sneak preview included critically acclaimed pieces like Arrival and A Monster Calls and other solid movies like What Happened to Monday and the remake of Baywatch. The entrance is, besides that, always a little cheaper than the regular movie-visit at Vue and it includes a little quiz beforehand, with the possibility to win a free drink or popcorn.

And even if your time-schedule does not allow a participation in the sneak preview of the upcoming Sunday, I highly recommend keeping it in mind and trying it — as part of student-life-culture — at least once in your time here. Any free Sunday evening, at 20:30.
