Actievoerders verstoren strategiebijeenkomst met Van Huffelen

Een bijeenkomst over de nieuwe strategie van de Radboud Universiteit is vanmiddag verstoord door enkele Pro-Palestinademonstranten.
Actievoerders begonnen plots leuzen te roepen tijdens een drukbezochte bijeenkomst van Radboud Reflects, waarin collegevoorzitter Alexandra van Huffelen en directeur Strategie en transitie Arjan-Tim Ferweda medewerkers zouden bijpraten over de nieuwe strategie van de Radboud Universiteit.
De zaal in het Collegezalencomplex was afgeladen met publiek. Uit een rondvraag van de gespreksleider bleek dat vooral medewerkers van het ondersteunend personeel op de bijeenkomst waren afgekomen, onder andere om antwoord te krijgen op de vraag hoe de nieuwe strategie in verhouding staat tot de fikse bezuinigingsopdracht van de universiteit.
Na een korte presentatie door interim-directeur strategie en transitie Arjan-Tim Ferweda, kwam Alexandra van Huffelen naar voren om met de gespreksleider verder te praten over de strategie. Zodra zij het woord nam stonden drie pro-Palestina-activisten op. Ze gooiden foto’s van zwaargewonde oorlogsslachtoffers door de collegezaal, en riepen “cut the ties” en “shame”. Pogingen van de gespreksleider en de collegevoorzitter om de demonstranten te vragen op een later moment verder te praten, liepen op niets uit.

Ook beveiligers konden de activisten niet op andere gedachten brengen. Ondertussen liepen steeds meer mensen teleurgesteld en soms geschrokken de zaal uit; enkele minuten later werd de bijeenkomst afgebroken.
‘Het is ongelooflijk spijtig dat we de bijeenkomst halverwege, vlak voor de mogelijkheid tot vragen en discussie, hebben moeten stoppen’, reageert Alexandra van Huffelen in een online reactie op de voortijdige beëindiging.
De bedoeling is het programma op korte termijn in te halen. Medewerkers die zich voor de eerste bijeenkomst hebben aangemeld, kunnen een uitnodiging verwachten, zo staat er in de online reactie van de collegevoorzitter.

Jammer dat ze hier weer de boel verstoren.
Medewerkers willen geinformeerd worden over hun toekomst en de Ru en dan gaat men hier weer de boel verstoren.
Gemiste kans actievoeders en mijn respect is al lang op voor deze actievoerders.
Aandacht is goed en terrecht, respect moet je verdienen.

Wat een domme actie. Hoe laat je zien dat er niet met je te praten valt? Handig hoor, actievoerders. Jullie doel is goed maar jullie aanpak totaal averechts.

When “doing something” is entirely ineffective in achieving your cause, and in fact detrimental to other legitimate goals and processes, I’d rather stay quiet. Wildly venting (justified) moral outrage in all the wrong places does more harm than good.
No one will be held accountable for genocide because you tossed around some flyers in the general vicinity of Van Huffelen.

When will you accept that not everyone feels the need to speak up about something going on over 3000 kilometres away? You can’t force people to advocate for your views. Actions like these are the equivalent of a toddler throwing a tantrum in a supermarket. You’re not getting your way, and people will look at you weird.
Want to actually make an impact? Go to The Hague or Brussels, where the real supporters of war crimes are. What has and is still happening in Gaza is horrible and Netanyahu should be brought to justice. But you are not achieving anything by disrupting normal campus life. Most employees want to just live their lifes. You should respect that, as much as you deserve respect for your views and opinions.

It always baffles me when some person is so keen to comment against any action being taken, but does nothing to change the status quo. I am not sure what world you live in, but I would rather live in that in which students are unafraid and unapologetically speaking up. Of course that will not bring about accountability for the genocide, don’t try to strawman those students. If the options are do nothing like you, or throw flyers, then hand me the damn flyers. While these aren’t the only options, frankly, our options are so limited. The students have tried EVERYTHING. Nothing seems to get through to Radboud. What do you suggest? Do you have anything constructive to add? Thanks for your thoughts!
What does more harm than good is your high and mighty, ‘I know the best strategy’ mindset. If you know so much, please enlighten us, oh so wise one! 😉

You say the students have tried everything and nothing seems to work. When I note that your strategy seems to not be working, I need to get off my high horse.
I criticize those who continually sabotage the functioning of the university when there is more in the world than Gaza – a climate crisis and the general rise of fascism stike me as particularly pertinent issues. You cannot monopolize the attention of every student and employee indefinitely, just because you feel one issue is more important than the issues they focus on.
Also, I’ll add that you know nothing of who I am and what I do “to change the status quo”.

Sure Charlie, best way to respond to criticism is to ridicule the other and respond with sarcasm. You have no clue what other people do or don’t do at other occasions to change the status quo, thus come off your high horse.
Actions like this don’t seem to change anything either, that’s the whole point. If you say something and you are not heard, it doesn’t help to repeat exactly the same thing using exactly the same words, but this time louder. When was the last time you changed your mind because someone became more and more aggressive in trying to convince you?
